Link popularity
Search engines rank your site’s position with a popularity score. They do this by looking at which sites link to you, what text they use to link to you and the rank and quality of site that is linking to you.
It’s a complex measurement system and each link is ranked differently. You need to find sites that will link to your site, using the search terms that you want to rank well on, so Google will increase your popularity score.
For example: A university was linking to a doctor's page on retinal imaging. The text used for the link is "retinal imaging doctor." Google looks at the university's page as being a highly relevant content page and views the link as having higher importance. They use a formula that takes the PageRank of the university page, and all the other links into that site that deal with "retinal imaging doctor", and come up with a number for the site’s popularity.
